Today we will be sorting events into these categories and headings.

First, watch this Year 1 teacher demonstrating how to sort events in will happen, might happen and wont' happen.

If the video does not play, please click here.

Once you have watched this video, download the activity sheet below and draw three events in each column (make sure each event matches the heading it is drawn under).

Sharing when there are left overs - Thursday and Friday, Week 8

ðŸ‘‚ Click here to have this page read aloud.

When we divide, we need to share so it's fair. Sometimes, however, our number cannot be shared equally and there are some left over. Watch the video of Miss Rubino below demonstrating what to do when this happens.

Apologies for the camera going in and out of focus.

If the video does not play, please click here

Here is a copy of the activity sheet completed in the video

Your Activity:

  1. Collect the number of household items as indicated on your work pack.

  1. Roll a 12-sided virtual dice to see how many groups you will need to divide by.

  1. Divide your objects by the number you rolled. Remember, you may not be able to share it equally.

  1. Use the activity sheet below and draw how you have shared your objects (refer to the video above for an explanation).

Once you have watched the video above, complete the activity sheet below. You can choose to either complete page 1 (pre-provided template) or page 2 (where you draw it yourself). First predict which object will be heavier or lighter and draw your prediction on the 'My Prediction' side. Then use your pan balance to check. Draw what actually happened on the 'Actual Answer' side. When done, take a photo and send it to your teacher.

Here is a video of Miss Rubino explaining how to complete this activity.

Division - Tuesday, Week 6

👂Click here to listen to this page being read.

Before starting this activity, watch the video from Madagascar below.

If the video does not play, please click here

In the video, there was one animal in each crate. When we're dividing, it's important to make sure we're sharing equally. Imagine if Marty, Alex and Gloria were all in the same box? Would that be fair? No, there wouldn't be enough space. When we share (divide) it needs to be equal and fair.

Today we will be learning how to divide and share equally between groups.  Watch Miss Rubino's demonstration on how to do this.

If the video does not play, please click here

Now it's your turn.

Collect 12 of the same household items (e.g. 12 toys, 12 pens, 12 lego blocks, 12 pairs of CLEAN socks).

Imagine these 12 objects are zoo animals. Pretend they are being placed in crates and being transferred to a new zoo (just like in the video). Each crate needs to have the same amount of animals (i.e. toys, pens, lego blocks or socks) in them otherwise it would not be fair. If the crates were unequal, some animals would have heaps of space, and other animals would be squished.

Use your 12 household items and share them equally between the number of groups allocated on your work packs. Remember “To divide... start with it all, then share so it’s fair” .

Have Fun!

Making Equal Groups - Monday, Week 6

Before getting started with this activity, watch the video below about the roller coaster.

Today we will be looking at making equal groups. Watch Miss Rubino's demonstration on how to do this.

If the video does not play, please click here

Now it's your turn. Either use household objects to make your groups (taking photos of them for your teacher) or use the activity sheet below and draw your equal groups. Have fun!

Writing Lists - Tuesday, Week 6

ðŸ‘‚Click here to hear me read this page

A list is a type of Informative text as the writing is factual. There are many different types of lists. For example, there are shopping lists, to-do lists, inventory lists, even our visual time table is a list. Sometimes a list tells you what you need to do or buy. Other times it may tell you what is inside something (for example, you may have a list telling you what is inside the pantry or cupboard).

Today you will be writing a list of what is in your toy box/dress up box or what is your bedroom. Before you do this though, be sure to watch Miss Rubino explain all about how to write a list.

Week 6 - Narratives

👂 Click to hear me read this page

Narratives are made up stories. Before we write a narrative, we should first brainstorm some ideas.

We need to brainstorm:

  • Our characters
  • The setting (where our characters are)
  • The problem (what goes wrong)
  • The resolution (how the problem is fixed).

Use the template below to help you brainstorm some ideas for your Narrative about children who dress up as superheroes.

A Royal Narrative - Friday, Week 5

👂 Click to hear me read this page

Narratives

Use the planning sheet below to plan your narrative (i.e. made up story) about a king or queen that comes to rule Pendle Hill Public School.

Click here for a copy

Here's some important points to remember when writing a narrative (made up story):

1. Orientation: The beginning of the story.

2. Problem: What went wrong? (This makes a story interesting)

3. Resolution: How did the characters fix the problem?

4. Ending: Finish off the story.

Our expectation for year 1 is that students would have at least 1 sentence for each part of the story. We would encourage all students to push for more. A good goal would be 2 sentences for each section.
